About the Author
Philip E. High (1914-2006) began contributing to the British SF magazines in 1955 and wrote prolifically for them until 1970. From the mid-1960s through the 1970s, he published some 14 SF novels, all the while keeping his day job; he retired as a bus driver in 1979. Indeed, in an interview with agent and editor Philip Harbottle, he revealed that "ninety per cent of his writing took place in the works canteen of the bus company for whom High was employed as a driver! High wrote his stories in long-hand during his spare time." His short fiction is typically fast-paced, well exemplified by "Dead End" (from Science Fantasy #56, December 1962), which in its short compass covers a span of time, events, and ideas that might last another writer a novel’s length.
